A lawsuit has been filed against 26 cosmetic companies that are claiming to be organic.

California law requires products to contain at least 70 per cent organic ingredients to be certified. The Centre for Environmental Health has lodged this lawsuit on the premise that the companies are violating these terms.

“There has been growing confusion and debate over what constitutes organic and a growing number of false labeling lawsuits.”

The executive director of the prosecuting group Michael Green said that after just reading the product ingredients it was clear that they didn’t meet the 70 per cent standard.

"For years, organic advocates have called on personal care companies to fix their improper `organic' labels, but our recent purchasing shows the industry is still rife with unsubstantiated organic claims," Green said.

Miranda Bond CEO of Inika Cosmetics commented on the lawsuit saying, “It is great to see environmental groups taking action against misleading companies in the area of organic cosmetics - it's a shame we don't have such an organisation protecting consumers in Australia.”
